0PI 698191'Plainsman'Thinopyrum ponticum (Podp.) Barkworth & D. R. Dewey Oklahoma, United StatesNLGRPNot Available2021DEVELOPEDCultivarThe heading date of Plainsmen in Ardmore, OK is on average 5 d earlier than Jose. Seed size as indicated by 1000 seed weight, of Plainsmen (4724 mg) was greater than that of Jose (4161 mg) and Platte (3143 mg). Persistence was improved by selection, with stands of Plainsmen ranging from 90-294% greater than stands of Jose across three locations. Total autumn forage yields of Plainsmen were greater (45 and 53%) than those of Jose at Iowa Park, TX and Ardmore, OK, respectively. Crude protein and digestibility of Plainsmen and Jose were similar in both the autumn and spring, despite earlier maturity of Plainsmen. Seedling vigor, using a visual rating scale of 0 – 5, was greater for Plainsmen (4.3) than Jose (2.7). Plainsmen was released due to its improved autumn forage yield and persistence under grazing, relative to Jose.2113458PI 698191
1PI 692651'MN-Clearwater'Thinopyrum intermedium (Host) Barkworth & D. R. Dewey Minnesota, United StatesNLGRPNot Available2020DEVELOPEDCultivarMN-Clearwater is the world’s first commercial food-grade intermediate wheatgrass (IWG, Thinopyrum intermedium) grain variety. It was developed as a synthetic population at the University of Minnesota (St. Paul, MN, USA) and released in August 2019. IWG is a perennial grain crop currently undergoing domestication and is also known for its impressive long root structure that offers substantial ecosystem services such as reduction in soil erosion and nutrient runoff. MN-Clearwater (Experimental designation MN1504) was created by intercrossing seven parents selected for high grain yield, reduced shattering, high free grain threshing, reduced lodging, and uniform maturity. The variety was advanced for two generations before being evaluated in statewide yield trials, after which the fourth seed generation was released as the variety in a limited public release. In variety trials across Minnesota, MN-Clearwater produced 562 kg Ha-1 (502 lb ac-1) of grain with minimal lodging and no disease incidence. The first two years produce the highest grain yields under Minnesota conditions and third year yields are significantly lower than the first two years. As the first Kernza variety to be released, we expect this population to be a cornerstone resource for the IWG research community as well as for interested growers, food processors, and commercial partners. MN-Clearwater grain is sold as Kernza® perennial grain. 2098748PI 692651

Dewey W62016Breeding materialSelections were made from 'Jose' in north Texas for persistence and digestibility, followed by a second cycle of selection in southern Oklahoma emphasizing digestibility. The heading date of NFTW6001 in Ardmore, OK is on average 7 d earlier than Jose. Persistence was improved by selection, based on greater stands of NFTW6001 (72%) versus Jose (17%) at Vernon, TX. Total forage yield of NFTW6001 has equaled or exceeded (up to 607 kg/ha-1) the yield of Jose in Oklahoma. Despite its earlier maturity, digestibility and crude protein concentration of NFTW6001 in summer is equal to Jose. The digestibility and crude protein of NFTW6001 and Jose are similar in autumn. NFTW6001 was released by the Noble Foundation's plant materials release committee due to its earlier maturity, improved forage yield and persistence relative to Jose.1932260PI 676025

6PI 658585'Manifest'Thinopyrum intermedium (Host) Barkworth & D. R. Dewey North Dakota, United StatesW62010DEVELOPED2009CultivarParent clones of Manifest were selected based on performance of their respective polycross progenies in replicated tests used to measure forage yield, seed yield, spring recovery, and resistance to leaf-spot disease caused primarily by Cochliobolus sativus (Ito and Kuribayoshi) Drechs. Ex Dastur. Manifest has exhibited consistent high forage yield over a wide geographic area and improved persistence under grazing compared with current cultivars.

Manifest is recommended in grass and grass-legume mixtures for hay and grazing in areas of the northern and central Great Plains and the Intermountain West where annual precipitation averages more than 350 mm (14 inches).
