0PI 700016 9094359Elymus virginicus L. North Dakota, United StatesW62020DEVELOPEDPRE 2012Virginia wildrye is a native, cool-season, perennial bunchgrass which grows 2-4 feet in height. Leaf blades are flat and numerous. The spikes are stiffly upright 2-6 inches long. Seeds can be awned or awnless. There are usually two spikelets/node, heavy glumes (horseshoe-shaped) bowed at the base, and short, rigid ligules. It can be misidentified as Canada wildrye, which can be found growing in the same locations. Canada wildrye heads are nodding and have longer awns when compared to heads of Virginia wildrye. Virginia wildrye prefers moist, heavier textured soils and is shade tolerant. It is considered short-lived but will reseed if allowed to grow to maturity. Drought tolerance is rated as fair and flood tolerance good. It will not tolerate saline conditions. Virginia wildrye is generally considered self-pollinated but has been found to cross pollinate with Canada wildrye. Tober Germplasm Virginia wildrye does not differ significantly from a general plant description of the species. Tober Germplasm has an average height of 2-4 feet and flowers early to mid-July in Bismarck, North Dakota. Flowering time is similar to 'Mandan' Canada wildrye and approximately two weeks earlier than a commercially available Minnesota ecotype. Seed harvest date varies depending on growing conditions and year. Seed harvest has ranged from early August to early September at Bismarck, North Dakota. Seed lots of Tober Germplasm harvested had a mix of glumed and glumeless seed and averaged approximately 81,000 seeds/pound. Tober Germplasm averaged 61,000 seeds/pound with the glumes intact and 112,000 seeds/pound without glumes.2137379PI 700016

25PI 655522'HOMESTEAD'Elymus canadensis L. Nebraska, United StatesW62008DEVELOPEDPRE 2008CultivarAdapted to USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5 of the Prairie Parkland or tallgass prairie ecoregion of the Midwest, USA. When grown in this region, produces more forage than the previously available cultivar, Mandan, and its forage had high in vitro dry matter digestibility and high protein concentration in comparison to another promising accession in a sward trial. Primary use will be in conservation and grassland plantings as a component of seeding mixtures. Was evaluated and tested using the experimental strain designation NE3. Uniformity was evaluated by collecting data from 130 spaced lants in the initial seed increase nursery at Mead, NE in 1996 on 3 year old plants. Mean and standard deviation (in parenthesis) for the following traits were: heading date 197(7) day-of-year, plant height 130(15) cm, flag leaf height 106(15) cm, flag leaf length 22.7(3.5) cm, flag leaf width 15(2) mm, head length 161(22) mm, head width 17(3) mm, and awn length 30(7) mm. Seed increase procedures are those that are required for certification of other self-pollinated grasses.1791162PI 655522

In seeded trials at Yakama Training Center (YTC), Yakima, WA (est. fall 2002), Camp Guernsey, Guernsey, WY (est. spring 2004 and 2005), Fillmore, UT (est. fall 2003 and 2004), and Malta, ID (est. fall 2004) when planted at a rate of 1 seed per cm pure live seed (PLS), FirstStrike had significantly (P<0.05) more seedlings per unit area (m2) than Pryor in the establishment year. At Fillmore, UT and Malta, ID, initial stand and persistence of FirstStrike were similar to the cultivar San Luis. FirstStrike was similar to or better than Pryor and San Luis for persistence. At Guernsey, WY, dry matter yield was 27% greater (P<0.07) in FirstStrike than Pryor. FirstStrike germinated five days earlier than Pryor on three different soil types (sandy loam, loam, and sandy). FirstStrike can be distinguished from the other cultivars by the presence or absence of several AFLP markers.1713452PI 643910

69PI 695367Tusas GermplasmElymus elymoides (Raf.) Swezey New Mexico, United StatesW62004COLLECTED1988Wild materialBottlebrush squirreltail is described as a cool-season short-lived native perennial bunchgrass. The climax status on bottlebrush squirreltail is enigmatic. It is most often characterized as an early seral species, however it may exist as a dominant grass in climax communities. Tusas Germplasm obtains a height of approximately 38-50 cm. Tusas Germplasm greens up in mid to late February when Paloma ricegrass (Achnatherum hymenoides) is still dormant. It flowers in April and is ready for harvest by late June. The potential uses of the Tusas Germplasm include erosion control, wildlife food/cover, restoration of disturbed sites and increasing plant diversity of rangelands. Bottlebrush squirreltail is tolerant to fire and able to quickly regenerate after fires, making it ideal for revegetation of fire disturbed areas. It may also be beneficial in seeding areas with severe noxious weed problems.1694830PI 695367

Roots are fibrous, dense and shallow with a few that extend beyond two feet (0.6m). Similar in appearance to slender wheatgrass and western wheatgrass. It is outcrossed and its' chromosome number is 2n=28. 'Schwendimar' seed germinates in cool soils and develops rapidly. Rhizome growth may not occur the first growing season. If flowers in June and goes dormant with the onset of summer drought. Little regrowth occurs in the fall with the increased precipitation. Growth resumes early in spring and rhizome development increases. For moreinformation click here.1644106PI 632756

The original seedlot, MH-114-1085, described in the collection notes as Agropyron sp., was included the NPGS as Elytrigia repens (PI 593438). This germplasm is the result of five cycles of recurrent selection for caespitose growth habit, vegetative vigor, leafiness, seed set, plant color, and freedom from plant pests. Based on chromosome pairing in intra- and interspecific hybrids, germplasm originated from a natural hybrid between quackgrass and an Asian relative of North American bluebunch wheatgrass and has a chromosome number of 2n=6x=42 with a genomic constitution of StStStStHH. This germplasm is less rhizomatous (58 vs. 83 cm), tall in stature (1007 vs. 934 mm), and has longer flag leaves (213 vs. 164 mm) than NewHy. Salinity tolerance comparable to NewHy, but less than tall wheatgrass (Thinopyrum ponticum).1639031PI 631392

Estimated average annual precipitation at the site is 380 mm based on extrapolation from official weather stations at Picabo (20.00 km to the southwest) and Craters of the Moon National Monument (23.75 km to the northeast). Removal of the awn without resultant seed damage has been problematic in Sand Hollow big squirreltail germplasm. Mass of the proximal centimeter of the awn was 0.272 mg at Evans Farm,(Millville, UT) in 2001, 33% lower than Sand Hollow. The less robust awn makes the seed more amenable to debearding. Spike disarticulates in a determinate fashion at the base, unlike most E. elymoides ssp. elymoides accessions that disarticulate indeterminately at each rachis internode.1563693PI 633741

Matures seed 7-14 days earlier and initiates growth 15-30 days sooner in spring than Arlington. Foliage grass green and lacks glaucous appearance. Mean culm height 118 cm (range 95-140). Seed weight 140,000 seeds/lb, average of 3 lots. Stems intermediate in coarseness, often bent at base. Lower, younger sheaths are purple tinged at base, pubescent. Leaf blades nearly glabrous, flat, lax, and width 6-14 mm. Spikes erect, length 8-20 cm. Lemmas glabous to scabrid-pubescent.1516630PI 593652
