Narrative

One aim of the breeding programme has been to improve the quality of berries to meet the requirements of retailers and consumers. This has been achieved with the release of Calypso which offers similar yield levels to Rapella, the main everbearer in UK strawberry production for the last ten years, but with improved quality, especially firmness and flavour.Parentage/Origin: Calypso was raised at Horticulture Research International -East Malling, from a cross between Rapella and Selva, made in 1985 by Dr David Simpson and Judi Bell. Selected in 1986 for its firm, well flavoured berries, Calypso (formerly EMR28) was released in the UK in 1991.Fruit Quality: The berries are very firm with a mid-red colour, glossy skin finish and have good flavour. They have a regular, conical shape although some of the primary berries can be irregular at the beginning of the season. The variety benefits from frequent picking as the fruit tends to darken once ripe.Yield and Fruit Size: Yields from everbearer trials in the UK vary considerably from year to year but typically Calypso will produce a Class 1 yield similar to Rapella following a spring planting. Trials have shown that Calypso will have a similar yield irrespective of whether planted in spring or autumn, whereas Rapella performs less well from an autumn planting. Calypso has consistently produced a higher proportion of large berries (>35mm) than Rapella in trials at HRI 1988-1993.Season: The overall cropping season is similar to Rapella although individual peaks within the season will vary between the two varieties. In some years spring planting may significantly advance the season of Calypso relative to an autumn planting, but yield is not affected. Plant Characteristics: Plants are moderately vigorous with an upright habit. Runner production is unusually prolific for an everbearing type and the runners must be removed regularly during the summer to prevent the plants from becoming stressed. This prolific runnering means that Calypso is more easily propagated in the nursery than other everbearing varieties.Disease Resistance: Calypso is moderately resistant to wilt (Verticillium dahliae) at levels roughly similar to that found with Cambridge Favourite. It is susceptible to powdery mildew (Sphaerotheca macularis) but the symptoms appear mainly on the leaves rather than the fruit, so this is less of a problem than with Rapella.Marketing: Calypso is suitable for the same markets as Rapella but it is significantly firmer and therefore likely to be more acceptable to supermarkets during periods of hot weather. Production costs could be significantly cheaper than those for Rapella if growers choose to plant Calypso in autumn, thus avoiding the need for costly cold storage and potting, necessary before a spring plantingUse of the Variety: Calypso is an everbearing dessert variety whose yield, fruit quality, flavour, season and availability mean that it is a suitable and desirable alternative to Rapella or Selva. Additionally, pick-your-own and amateur growers are attracted to this variety due to its ease of cultivation and pleasant flavour.
