Per Winkler (see citation): "Next in importance to Cabernet-Sauvignon in the Bordeaux region of France, the Merlot is now recognized as a variety of real merit in California. It is fairly productive with head-training and either long spur- or cane pruning and matures ahead of Cabernet-Sauvignon with which they are usually blended. The clusters are medium large; long conical; loose to compact with long pedunicles. Berries medium size; round; and bluish-black in color. The leaves are glaberous above, tormentose below, deeply 5 lobed with petiolar sinus open. Per www.wine-lovers-page.com: "It does extremely well in the state of Washington and...on Long Island N.Y. Results in the Finger Lakes region of N.Y., where it ripens in early October, have been mixed due to its relative lack of cold-hardiness and the fruit subject to bunch rots." Per unknown source: "One of the Bordeaux varieties used in conjunction with Cabernet-Sauvignon and Cabernet franc to produce the red wines of Bordeaux particularly suited to aging. Clusters: Medium-small, about 1/7 to 1/5 lb., long, conical, loose to well-filled, stems long. Berries: Medium size, spherical, reddish black to black, neutral flavor, juicy pulp. Growth and Soil Adaptibility: A vigorous grower with a semi-erect growth habit; good leaf cover. Grows well on fine and medium-texture soils. Harvest Period: Matures before Cabernet-Sauvignon, late September to mid-October. Training and Pruning: Head training with cane pruning is recommended. Other Cultural Characteristics: The fruit has been reported to not stand rains very well before harvest. The vines leaf out fairly late. Winery Use: Primarily for blending with Cabernet-Sauvignon to soften the wines and to shorten the aging requirement. Has a mild Cabernet-like flavor and aroma, and on a limited basis has been bottled as a varietal wine."
