32NA 86754(seedling selection)Ophiopogon japonicus (Thunb.) Ker Gawl. NANot Available2005CloneFull name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Ophiopogon japonicus (seedling selection). A dense, low form of Ophiopogon japonicus (identity presumed, but not yet confirmed) that appeared in the turf in China Valley below the road between beds C-01 and C-02 (technically, the lawn is included in bed AC-C-01) at least as early as 2005, possibly a few years earlier. It has been slowly spreading ever since, and appears to be an excellent turf candidate based on its extreme durability, naturally good, even height for turf use without mowing. It is taller and longer-bladed than 'Gyoku-ryu' ('Nanus') and seems much more tolerant of heavy foot traffic, and is highly effective at crowding out weeds and grass. It also may tolerate sun exposure better than other cultivars, based on its performance in the exposed lawn where it appeared. -SBL2158025NA 86754

Elevation: 1000-1250 meters.Wild materialPlant's received-as name listed in accession book as "Ophiopogon graminifolia"; plant is an Ophiopogon and description of fruits turning blue supports this; there is no such thing as "Ophiopogon graminifolia". Another plant, NA 54659 (Liriope sp.--now determined as a different species of Ophiopogon, not Liriope) was found growing with this accession later and was not recorded in the collection notes. This clone has yellow speckled variegation, which (aside from the large size and slow-spreading habit) distinguishes it easily from others in our collections. After careful study of the plants, it's clear that this is simply O. japonicus. -SBL1940466NA 49348
