M. arborea traits of interest include robust stature, large leaves, drought tolerance, large seeds, winter activity, and frost tolerance. Frost tolerance was unexpected, but M. arborea plants have been left in the field until early December, endured several frosts including minus 10C, and retained their green leaves when moved to the greenhouse. Surplus plants left in the field have been observed to grow shoots half meter tall into deep snow drifts. Thus, M. arborea plants are winter active and frost tolerant, as are some Alborea plants. The morphology of Alborea plants is variable, and ranges from resembling alfalfa to resembling M. arborea, with the majority of the plants somewhere in between. Many Alborea plants are more robust than alfalfa, with larger leaves and flowers, and larger pods and seeds. Alborea plants tend to have narrow crowns, and a more branching root system than alfalfa. About half of Alborea plants will have a range of variegated flower color due to the yellow from M. arborea and the purple from alfalfa. Most of the remainder will have either yellow or purple flowers, plus a few plants with cream flowers. Alborea seed production in the field isolation with wild bees is about 80% of alfalfa. If competing bloom of alfalfa is present, Alborea seed production is scant. Alborea crosses well with alfalfa in hand crosses in the greenhouse, thus germplasm can be easily transferred to alfalfa. The first in the series was WISFAL (PI 560333), the second WISFAL-2 (PI 659349), and third WISFAL-3. Elevation of diploid germplasm to the tetraploid level permits efficient germplasm transfer to alfalfa in tetraploid X tetraploid crosses. WISFAL-3 plants are robust with broad crowns, branched root system, and yellow flowers. When cut for hay, WISFAL-3 produces a large first crop and less in succeeding crops. It has not been tested under grazing but is expected to do as well as WISFAL-1 that persists well in pastures. WISFAL-3 was bred for adaptation by three cycles of crossing plants that survived for five years in three different nurseries. This resulted in WISFAL-3 being the most persistent of all lines after nine years in a nursery, near Madison, WI (2009-2018). WISFAL-3 maintained a visual stand with no large gaps, while WISFAL-1 and several alfalfa cultivars including Vernal had some survivors, but large gaps in stand. This germplasm has been selected for increased dry matter yield and fall growth. Three replicates of ten plants each of 32 halfsib families of IAMF102 were planted at the three selection locations in semi-sward plots. Ten plant halfsib family plots were space planted in a 2 by 5 plant grid (30cm between plants). Halfsib family plots were separated from each other by 45cm on the plots long axis and 120cm on the plots short axis. Plants were greenhouse established during May 2004 and transplanted to field locations in August 2004. Plants were clipped and evaluated regularly during the 2005 and 2006 growing seasons. During September (Ames, IA) and October (Arlington and Prairie du Sac, WI) 2006 after the onset of fall dormancy response by the plants plant selection was conducted at all three locations. All plants within a halfsib family were visually inspected; the highest yielding plants within each family were dug up. All plants from a family were lined up and above ground biomass fresh weight was measured on the visually selected plants. Of visually selected plants the best one or two plants per location per halfsib family were brought into the greenhouse. A total of 102 plants were brought in from the field to overwintered in the greenhouse of these 77 plants survived and were transplanted into an isolated crossing block at the US Dairy Forage Research Center Farm in Prairie du Sac, WI in April 2007. Bumblebees (Bombus impatiens) were used to open pollinate plants for several months. Halfsib seed was harvested from individual plants and equal quantities of halfsib seed of 60 of the 77 selected plants were bulked to form syn1 seed. The resulting population was evaluated in a field trial near Las Cruces, NM, that received reduced irrigation allotments (i.e., 50% of normal) during 2000 and 2001. In March 2002, phenotypic selection for early spring forage production was imposed on surviving plants. Fifty genotypes were selected and intermated under cage isolation in 2003 using leaf cutter bees to produce Syn. 1 breeder seed. Based on yield trial results, Syn. 2 breeder seed of NuMex Bill Melton was produced from 400 Syn. 1 progeny grown under cage isolation with pollination by honey bees in 2007 and 2008. Selection was based on yield performance, freedom from disease and insect pests, and autumn regrowth. Experimental falcata population IA-3018 was developed at Iawa State Univ by C.P. Wilsie in 1960's. Parental plants were intercrossed by hand in the greenhouse at Ames, IA during the winter of 1999-2000 and equal quantities of seed from each parent were bulked. Seeds were germinated in spring 2000 in the greenhouse, and approx. 1000 seedlings were transplanted to the field at the iowa State Univ Agronomy and Agric. Engineering Farm at Ames, IA in May 2000. In Sept. 2003, 56 plants were selected based on persistence, vigor, autumn regrowth, moved to the greenhouse, and intercrossed. Equal quantities of seed from each plant were bulked to form the Syn 1 generation of IAMF101. Syn 2 seed was produced in Idaho in 2004 and 2005. The SD 201 plant was tetraploid, developed by treating seed of the SD 201 germplasm with colchicine. The 32 parental genotypes were selected from among 104 genotypes that had been testcrossed to four elite alfalfa populations. Selections were based on testcross performance for yield in field trials at the Iowa St. Univ. Agronomy and Agric. Engineering Farm near Ames, IA and at the Iowa State Univ. Northeast Res. Farm near Nashua, IA from 2002 to 2003. Parents were intercrossed by hand without emasculation in the greenhouse during the winter 2003-2004. Ineffective Agate and Ineffective Saranac plants were crossed onto 68 clones of a regenerating genotype Regen-SY to produce the SYN1. All SYN1 progeny of both crosses were effectively nodulated. Approx. 210 SYN1 plants were randomly intercrossed to produce SYN2 seed. The SYN2 progeny segregated 2970 nodulated to 280 (8.6%) ineffectively nodulated plants. Approx. 59% (56/95) of the ineffective plants regenerated from leaf tissue.
