Large mass of old trees (at time of accessioning in 2023), apparently belonging to the typical form of the species, that were planted on Hickey Hill many years ago; most are on the east edge of the Hamamelis Collection in the woods west of the Asian Collection's shed. A small number may also be found in the woods on the south side of the upper Hamamelis Collection. Possibly NA 16575, or something even older that was simply not accessioned at the time that large groups of conifers were installed in that area. An old display label identifying the taxon hangs on one of the trees in the uppermost part of the main mass. Probably most likely to be NA 427, 'Plumosa'. -SBL Form received: unknown propagule type. | 2155328 | NA 87333 |

Welch (DS 464) lists a cultivar 'Tatsunami' under C. obtusa as a synonym of 'Tsatsumi', but it is clearly not this plant. -SBL | 2144771 | NA 40143 |
| 170 | NA 88567 | RJLSEUS2022-040 | Chamaecyparis thyoides (L.) Britton et al. | Florida, United States | NA | | | 2023 | COLLECTED | 12/14/2022 | Plants growing in woodlands at Escribano Point Bayou Campground not far from the parking lot. Occasional. | 30.51018200, -87.00448800 | 1 | Plants are growing in part-shade of dense mesic vegetation only a few meters from the edge of mixed evergreen and deciduous woodland associated with the Yellow River Marsh Aquatic Preserve. While this habitat surface is typical mesic and well-drained, it is clearly subject to periods of inundation from high tides or storms as it is a meter or less above the marsh habitat. Additionally, it seems likely that there is plentiful moisture further down in the soil profile based on some of the plant associates. Soils: The underlying geology of this area is classified as Alluvium, of Pleistocene/Holocene origin and consists of undifferentiated Quaternary sediments of varying thickness including siliciclastics, organics and freshwater carbonates. The siliciclastics are light gray, tan, brown to black, unconsolidated to poorly consolidated, clean to clayey, silty, unfossiliferous, variably organic-bearing sands to blue green to olive green, poorly to moderately consolidated, sandy, silty clays. Organics occur as plant debris, roots, disseminated organic matrix and beds of peat. Freshwater carbonates, often referred to as marls in the literature, are scattered. Source: USGS FL Map Data (https://mrdata.usgs.gov/geology/state/state.php?state=fl) The primary soil types in the collection area are classified as Ortega Sand soils (0 to 5 percent slopes). The Ortega Series consists of very deep, moderately well drained soils that formed in a sandy deposit on marine terraces. These soils are on nearly level to strongly sloping upland landscapes. Slopes range from 0 to 12 percent. They are extremely acid to slightly acid throughout. They are fine sand or sand to depths of more than 2 meters. Silt plus clay totals less than 5 percent between 25 cm and 1 meter depth. Endl. | | NA | | Not Available | 1992 | | | | | | | Cultivar | Full name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Meroke'. Name change from 'Meroke' to 'Meroke Twin' was based on a 1993 phone conversation between Sue Martin and Ed Rezek; information recorded in the Names table states only, "seedling of Joe Reis's. Information in Welch's book is incorrect." However, that information does appear with 'Meroke'; 'Meroke Twin' is listed by Welch as a superfluous name for 'Little Markey' (a somewhat similar cultivar), and Welch may not be correct about that. Other sources regard 'Meroke Twin' as a synonym of 'Meroke', and our plant matches 'Meroke' better than 'Little Marky'. Further, Bob Fincham is credited with first publishing the name 'Meroke' (in 1983). Form received: rooted cutting. | 2147135 | NA 63528 |
