PI 674516 | 'Artillery' | Bromus inermis Leyss. | Oklahoma, United States | PVPO | | Not Available | 2015 | DEVELOPED | | | | | | Cultivar | The Agricutural Research Service of the United States Department of Agricuture announces the release of a new smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis, Leyss) variety Stress Tolerant Smooth Bromegrass. It exhibits excellent yield potenial and high tolerance ot heat and drought extremes of Oklahoma. STSB was develeoped through a recurrent selection progarma conducted at the USDA-ARS, Grazinglands Eesearch Laboratory, El Reno, OK from a bulked pool of Bromus inermis seed collection at five sites from central Kansas, Western Missouri, Northern Oklahoma; thirty -one PI accessions of plant collections (table 1) from Turkey, Iran, Spain and Mongolia; and thirteen PI collections consisting of the U.S.populations/cultivars (table 1). Beginning in 1998, seed from all collections were bulked, sown and allowed to randomly intercross at maturity. Seed were harvested from this population, resown and allowed to grown to maturity. In 1999 and 2000, undesirable plants were remvoed from the nursery. In 2001 , surviving plants were allowed to cross-pollinate and seed was again harvested. The selection of undersirable plants follwed by cross-pollination was repeated. This two year pattern of recurrent selection conitnued for five cycels, ending in 2008. During htis selection cycle, a low nitrogen applciation rate of 44.8 kg/ha was maintianed to provide an additional level of stress to the plant material with no irrigation. Seed for first year perfromance testing were bulked from the surviving plants of cycle-5. | 1925768 | PI 674516
PI 674468 | 'Arsenal' | Bromus biebersteinii Roem. & Schult. | Utah, United States | PVPO | | Not Available | 2015 | DEVELOPED | | | | | | Cultivar | The United States Department of Agriculture (ARS) announces the release of the cultivar `Arsenal? meadow bromegrass [Bromus biebersteinii Roem. and Schult. (excluded)] (Reg. No. CV-__, PI______) for use on semiarid rangelands and non-irrigated pastures as a rapid establishing forage grass with early spring growth, good fall nutritional quality, and exceptional winter hardiness. Arsenal is a 39 clone synthetic that was derived from the same base population as the meadow bromegrass cultivar Cache. Selection emphasis in Arsenal meadow bromegrass was for plant vigor, seedling emergence from a deep planting depth, forage and seed yield, and seed mass under dryland environments ranging between 250 to 450 mm of annual precipitation. Molecular marker genotyping demonstrated that Arsenal is genetically different from meadow bromegrass cultivars Cache, Fleet, Armada, and Admiral. On dryland sites, Arsenal had significantly better seedling establishment and overall stand persistence combined from 2011-2013 than Cache and Regar. Arsenal has been evaluated in NY, KY, WY, and UT for forage yield and is superior or equal to the cultivar Cache demonstrated its ability to produce DMY comparable to or better than smooth bromegrass and meadow bromegrass cultivars under higher precipitation environments in NY and KY. Fall nutritional characteristics of Arsenal were better than Cache in crude protein and in vitro true digestibility. Arsenal expands the use of meadow bromegrass from irrigated pastures to non-irrigated pastures and rangelands with 330 mm or more annual precipitation, providing livestock producers with high yielding nutritious forage, which is winter hardy and drought tolerant. | 1925721 | PI 674468
PI 671851 | 'Newell' | Bromus inermis Leyss. | Nebraska, United States | PVPO | | Not Available | 2014 | DEVELOPED | | | | | | Cultivar | `Newell? smooth bromegrass was released by USDA-ARS and the Univ. of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2014. Newell is a pasture type smooth bromegrass that is adapted in the USA to areas north of 40o N lat and east of 100o W long that have 500 mm or more annual precipitation or in areas that have similar climate conditions because of elevation. Newell was developed to replace the most widely used smooth bromegrass cultivar, Lincoln, by improving its forage digestibility. Newell can produce forage with higher digestibility as measured by in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) than Lincoln smooth bromegrass, it can produce equivalent or greater forage yields, and when utilized by beef cattle in grazing studies, Newell produced significantly greater average daily gains and gains per hectare. Newell is named after pioneer grass breeder, L. C. Newell. Newell bromegrass was developed by four generations of population improvement breeding by K.P. Vogel. The cultivar Lincoln was used as the base population. Principal selection criteria were forage yield and IVDMD. Each breeding generation was about five years. Newell was tested as Lincoln HYLD-HDMD C4 in multi-location small plot trials and in a replicated grazing trial in eastern Nebraska. Newell smooth bromegrass is a stable, improved random mated population and will be maintained and increased accordingly. Because of its genetic background, it is similar to Lincoln in appearance and maturity. Breeder seed will be jointly maintained and produced by USDA-ARS and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with random-mated, isolated increase fields originating from Syn 1 breeder seed harvested from the Cycle 4 polycross nursery. Foundation seed production of Newell will be managed by Husker Genetics, the Foundation Seed Division of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln, NE. | 1918014 | PI 671851

Characterized by strong seedling vigor, early spring growth, rapid recovery from cutting and high aftermath production. Consistently taller than average, and was significantly taller than Saratoga, and early as well. At one location in Wisconsin, had superior brown leafspot resistance, and was significantly more resistant than Saratoga. After three production years of yield data from five trials, it averaged 0.36 tons of forage at 12% moisture per acre per year more than Saratoga. In these grass-alfalfa mixture trials, it averaged 0.17 tons of forage at 12% moisture per acre per year more than Saratoga. Matures about two days earlier than Saratoga in New York. | 1668735 | PI 636473 |
PI 634710 | 'CACHE' | Bromus riparius Rehmann | Utah, United States | PVPO | | Not Available | 2004 | DEVELOPED | PRE 02/23/2004 | | | | | Cultivar | A meadow bromegrass producing significantly more dry matter than Fleet at all irrigation rates and significantly more dry matter than Regar at the two lowest irrigation rates, under a line-source study with irrigation rates that ranged from 10.1 to 36.8 mm per week. Yielded significantly more total dry matter than orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata) on an irrigated site in northern Utah, under repeated defoliation (6-harvests per year). Evaluated in the Northern Plains Regional Trials at Bluecreek, UT; Green Canyon, UT; Mead, NE; Sidney, NE; Mandon, ND; and Miles City, MT for dry matter forage production and percent stand. Produced significantly more dry matter forage than cvs. of meadow bromegrass, orchardgrass, and smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis), when combined over six locations and three years. Similar to Regar in establishment and persistence, but significantly better than other meadow bromegrass cvs., orchardgrass, and smooth bromegrass. Begins growth early in spring and leaves remain green and succulent longer in the growing season than tall fescue (Festuca arundianceae) and orchardgrass. Seedling rate of 13 to 15 kg ha-1 is recommended in area of adaption. Seedling vigor, as indicated by seedling emergence from a deep planting depth (7.6cm), better than Regar and comparable to Fleet and Paddock. Individual seed weight comparable to Fleet and Paddock, but significantly heavier than Regar. Produced 500 kg of seed ha-1 when grown in rows 0.76 m apart on an irrigated site. Approx. 188,679 seeds per kg at 100% purity. | 1652630 | PI 634710
