58NA 86815(gold-leaved selection)Weigela sinica (Rehder) H. Hara NANot Available2021Wild materialFull name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Weigela japonica var. sinica. (gold-leaved selection). Plant noticed with gold foliage in bed AC-J-M, a bit to the north of Styrax japonicus 'Carillon'. It is young, maybe only one to three years old, and seems to have been cut back in the past, maybe during herbaceous plant cutbacks. It might be a seedling of the Weigela coraeensis 55286-H growing in nearby bed AC-J-N-2, or it could be a cultivar that was planted but never accessioned (however, this seems somewhat unlikely). The plant should be watched to see what characteristics it expresses as it develops. [Update 4/28/2023: flowering for the first time with almost pure white flowers (with just a little yellow in bud and inside, otherwise unmarked), later developing pink centers that darken, and the flower overall taking on a pinkish hue with age. Based on this, it is likely a seedling of W. japonica var. sinica. Initially accessioned as unknown source, but now pretty clearly a spontaneous seedling that appeared at USNA. Also almost certainly a seedling of NA 49629-P, our only previous living plant of W. japonica var. sinica. On 9/4/2024, this ID was confirmed based on pressed flowering material, which shows leaves densely pubescent on the abaxial surface, calyx divided to about the base, and corollas narrowly tubular on the lower third to half. Given the clear background, this is presumed to have at least half of its genome from the wild-collected NA 49629, SABE 750, but it is most likely a full-blooded, self-pollinated seedling of that accession.] -SBL2154951NA 86815
