Collected from a persisting or naturalized population found on a woodland edge in the Arnot Forest. Thicket-forming where well adapted. Spreads by root suckers, especially on coarse-textured soils and where herbaceous cover is not dense. Bright-green compound leaves are alternately arranged on bristle-covered branches. Petioles and seed pods are also covered with red-brown bristles. Blooms from late May through June with numerous large rose-purple flowers. On fertile sites, mature plants reach a height of 8 to 10 feet, but 5 to 7 feet is more common. Good seed crops are produced annually and plants often start producing seed the second year after planting. Ideally suited for providing cover and controlling erosion on infertile, droughty, erodiable soils. Thrives on the outer slopes and other steep banks of surface-mine spoil and effectively reduces erosion on roadbanks, sandblown areas, and gravel pits. Its thick foliage provides a dense canopy during the summer and good leaf letter that protects the soil after each growing season. Though it spreads rapidly on barren sites, it does not compete will with established mowed grass or woody vegetation. | 1338323 | PI 443387 |
