In the U.S. Pacific Northwest chickpeas have been historically produced in the “Palouse” region of eastern Washington and northwestern Idaho. Annual precipitation in this region typically ranges from 450-700 mm. Chickpeas have not been historically grown in Washington in regions that receive 300-450 mm precipitation annually, where the predominate cropping system is spring wheat-spring fallow. Recent economic trends have led producers in these regions of intermediate precipitation to consider growing chickpeas as an alternative to spring wheat. The USDA-ARS has developed and released the kabuli chickpea cultivar Royal. (Experimental designation CA04900851C). Royal was released based on its superior yield and large seed size. The USDA-ARS (Pullman, WA) conducted replicated yield trials across 18 location-years receiving approximately 450-750mm annual precipitation. Royal reached 50% flowering in approximately 60 days and matured in 106 days. Royal is moderately resistant to blight caused by Ascochyta rabiei. The mean yield of Royal over all trials conducted by the USDA-ARS was 1436 kg/ha. Hundred seed weight in these trials averaged 55.8 g. HighLine Grain Growers independently evaluated Royal across 12 location-years receiving approximately 300-350 mm annual precipitation. The mean yield of Royal over all trials conducted by HighLine Grain Growers was 1366 kg/ha. hundred seed weight in these trials averaged 52.0 g.
