Originally brought to Indian Territory by the family of Sarah Wilson Thompson, a full-blooded Lenape who lived on the Delaware Reserve. Her family migrated from their original homeland along the east coast in what is now New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, and northern Delaware. This acccession can therefore be associated with the Lenape (Delaware Indian) tribe.1025016PI 645584

9PI 451692Cargill North Temperate Zone CoroicoZea mays L. subsp. mays Iowa, United StatesNC7KERNELS1980DONATED11/1980Breeding materialUnimproved non-cornbelt, flour-flint flour population altered from short to long day, cornbelt adaptation. Population with 94% recovery of tropical germplasm. Stalks brittle. Ears slender with low kernel row numbers. Kernel colors white-yellow-red. Although the three Chavantes populations were presumably collected from the same Indian tribe, Chavantes, they differ considerably in maturity and gross appearance under Hawaiian growing conditions. Initially Red Chavantes was crossed with the source of earliness, Early Russian. During a series of three backcrosses to tropical, Red Chavantes was always involved and four additional representatives of this race were added at the second backcross. Black Chavantes was involved at the first backcross only. Interpollination among the different sources was practiced following each backcross. An adapted population was formed through phenotypic recurrent selection out of the third backcross generation. There is a lower than average tolerance to heat, drought, and high plant density. Best results are obtained where plant densities are kept below 40,000 plants per hectare.1346628PI 451692

Selected for 3 years by E. A. Hynek for productivity by eliminating only poor yielding individuals. The Ho-Chunk people from whom the seed was obtained stated that the early white settlers nicknamed it "Bronze Beauty" upon seeing it. It is a flint corn with a high frequency of bronze or tan kernels. Red kernels also segregate. It differs from many U.S. Northern Flints by having narrower kernels on tapered ears with a higher kernel row number.1016393PI 645583
