Lowe (CFIA Reg. No. 8132 ; Canadian PBR Cert. No. 5884) is a two-rowed, hulled, spring barley developed for malting use, especially for the craft brewing industry. Lowe has a high level of resistance to FHB, accumulating 50 percent less DON than AC Metcalfe, with levels similar to the most resistant check Chevron. Under North American conditions, Lowe is resistant to surface-borne [caused by U. hordei (Pers.) Lagerh.] and loose smuts [caused by U. nuda (C.N. Jensen) Rostr. nom. nud.], and moderately resistant to scald [caused by Rhynchosporium commune Zaffarano, McDonald and Linde sp. nov. formerly Rhynchosporium secalis (Oudem.) J.J. Davis], spot form of net blotch [caused by Drechslera teres (Sacc.) Shoemaker, Pyrenophora teres Drechs. (teleomorph)], and FHB [F. graminearum Schwabe, teleomorph Gibberella zeae (Schwein.) Petch]. It has intermediate resistance to the net form of net blotch (P. teres forma teres) and spot blotch [caused by Cochliobolus sativus (Ito & Kuribayashi) Drechs. ex Dastur, Bipolaris sorokiniana (Sacc.)]. Lowe is moderately susceptible to common root rot [caused by Bipolaris sorokiniana (Sacc.) Shoemaker]. Lowe is susceptible to stem rust (caused by P. graminis Pers. f.sp. tritici Erikss. and Henn) and to the barley yellow dwarf virus. Lowe out-yielded the malting checks AC Metcalfe and CDC Copeland in two years of agronomic evaluation in trails run by the Prairie Recommending Committee for Oat and Barley. It is a tall variety with better lodging resistance than the malting checks. Lowe matures 3 d later than the malting checks. Lowe has excellent properties for malting and brewing, with low protein, high extract, and low beta-glucan concentrations in the wort. Lowe combines low protein with adequate enzyme and free amino N for malting. It has acceptable wort beta-glucan levels, low viscosity, and good friability. Because of this malting package, Lowe can be suitable for all-malt brewing as is common in the craft brewing industry.

Lowe is derived from the cross H92017203Z/Ponoka. The breeding line H92017203Z was derived from the cross of AC Oxbow/Leo. AC Oxbow is a two-rowed, hulled, malting barley developed from the cross TR233/WPG8020//WPG823/TR222. Leo INIA-CCU is a malting barley from Chile. Ponoka is a two-rowed, hulled, general-purpose barley selected from the cross H92001F1/TR229. H92001F1 was the F1 generation of the cross Harrington/Camelot. TR229 was a malting line from the Brandon program.
