Narrative

ND Genesis is a two-rowed spring barley with a lax spike. Kernels have a while aleurone, long hairs on the rachilla, and a semi-smooth awn attached to the lemma. ND Genesis can be easily distinguished from other two-rowed varieties because its lateral sterile florets have the deficiens character, which results in the extreme size reduction of the sterile florets. At first look, the spike will appear to have no lateral florets. This character is conferred by the Vrs1.t allele. Barley varieties such as Pinnacle and Conlon have the Vrs1.b allele that results in larger sterile lateral florets.
