Narrative

The new raisin grape cultivar Summer Muscat, formerly tested as B1-88, provides an early-ripening seedless muscat raisin grape suitable for cutting canes and drying on the vine. Summer Muscat is an early season white seedless grape which ripens with Fiesta, about the third week of August in Fresno. Sugar development reaches 22 percent by the second to third week of August, allowing canes to be cut and the fruit to dry on the vine. The clusters are large in length but only medium to small (0.25 to 0.5 pounds) in weight. They are conical with shoulders, and are loosely filled. This allows the fruit to dry rapidly on the vine when canes are cut. The berries are medium size, averaging 1.4 to 1.9 grams which is slightly smaller than Fiesta (1.6 to 2.1 grams) and are oval in shape. The flavor is sweet with a strong muscat flavor that remains when the fruit is dried. The raisin quality based on percent B or better grade is similar to Fiesta and has averaged 85 to 100 percent. The skin of Summer Muscat is medium thick, medium tough, adheres to the flesh, and is similar to Fiesta. The berries contain 1 to 2 aborted seeds which are small and rarely noticeable. Summer Muscat blooms 1 to 3 days before Fiesta and is vigorous in growth. A "T" trellis is recommended to spread the fruiting canes and to allow for more air circulation when drying fruit on cane cut vines. Summer Muscat is very productive averaging 2.0 clusters per shoot compated to 1.5 cluster per shoot for Fiesta.
