Narrative
This Corylus ferox is a Himalayan hazelnut that was collected from the wild in China. It is the nearest relative to Corylus tibetica because of the similar characteristics of the husk. This species is indigenous to northern India, Nepal, and Sikkim, and can grow at altitudes greater than 3,000 meters. It also prefers relatively mild climate and acid soil. It is the only Corylus species with ovate-lanceolate leaf with silky hairs on the veins on the underside of the leaves. Nuts of this species are small, fairly thick-shelled, oblate, golden brown, grouped in clusters of 3 to 6, and are enclosed in spiny, cup-shaped husk. The chestnut-like husk help to distinguish this species from other hazel species. The taste of Corylus ferox nut resembles that of the European filbert.
