Narrative
Haig Dermen (USDA Agricultural Research Service, Beltsville, Maryland) generated a number of colchicine induced polyploids of apple and pears. Pear selection US 44-3-1 was a triploid seedling from the cross of a 2x Seckel type seedling with 4x 'US-Mich. 504'. This tree was received at NCGR as presumably a hexaploid (colchiploid) selection generated from US 44-3-1. However, flow cytometry shows that this accession is triploid (3x). Either may have been a hexaploid chimera, and the 6x cellular layers have been lost over time during re-propagation, or the notation of "6x" referred to this clone being used in Dermen's hexaploid colchicine experiments, but is the original US 44-3-1.
