Sampionka -- Derived from a cross of President Drouard x Bartlett made in 1952 by Prof. Dr. Arsen Stancevic. Fruit: very large, averaging over 250 g. of a rather uneven weight, with 95 mm in length and 75 mm in width. The shape is pyriform, like Bartlett. The calyx is medium-sized and open, with small and pointed sepals, which are russety and half-bent. The basin is roundish and large, finely wrinkled, russety. The stalk is medium large and rather stout, grey-brown and fleshy where it joins the fruit. the stem cavity is small and shallow, slightly ribbed. Fruit skin is smooth, medium thin, glossy, adhering tightly to the flesh. The ground colour is greenish-yellow, becoming lemon-yellow with ripening, slightly blushed on the sunn side. Flesh is whitish-yellow, juicy and melting, of a sweet acid flavour and pleasant aroma. It is of high quality, containing 14% soluble solids, 0.15% acids and 11% total sugars, with no grit cells. The core is small, oval, placed in the middle of the fruit. Seeds are medium large to large, oval, brown, and plump. Ripe the first week of September, 10-15 days after Bartlett. Susceptible to bruising during transport due to its tender and thin skin.
Tree: medium vigor, robust and fairly spreading, like Bartlett. The trunk is straight and strong, with smooth, grey-brown bark. The crown is moderately wide, with strong shoulders which grow at 60 degrees. Short fruiting spurs and short branches predominate. It also bears some on long slender branches, but they are prone to break under the weight of the crop. The shape and colour of branches are similar to those of Bartlett. Buds medium-size, conical, obtuse, light brown. Leaf buds are small, pointed, free, with a broad base. Leaves medium-size, elliptical. Flowers medium-size, white, open. The flowering season is mid-late with a tendency to mid-early (1-2 days before Bartlett). The good pollinators are Passe Crassane, Packhan's Triumph, Stark Delicious and Guyot. It is diploid, producing abundant pollen with good germination. A steady and heavy cropper. It comes into bearing very early, in the second year after planting. It is moderately resistant to diseases and pests, like Bartlett. Compatibility with quince is good so no interstem is required.
