DOI: 10.1111/tpj.12912. Note: Zizania latifolia is a host of Ustilago esculenta; those infected plants can only reproduce vegetatively, and making the host-smut interaction dependable of continuous and “long-term artificial selection”; this study sequenced a non-infected Z. latifolia and re-sequenced two cultivars; it found “31144 genes in 16909 gene families, of which 2871 genes in 594 families are probably specific to Zizania”; this study found high genomic synteny with the Oryza genome; since Z. latifolia carries tolerance to cold and resistance to rice blast (caused by Pyricularia grisea), the evidence of this study provides genetic references for transferring those traits to rice
