It carries the FT-A2 ancestral allele D10 characterized by an aspartic acid at the 10th residue of the FT-A2 protein. Glenn et al. (2021) demonstrated that the introgression of the A10 allele (alanine at the 10th residue) was associated with a higher number of spikelets per spike than the D10 allele in multiple populations. A 2021 field study including BC4F4 sister lines for the D10 and A10 alleles showed that A10 allele was associated with a 5.7% (P = 0.0011) increase in spikelet number per spike and a 6.3% increase (P = 0.0168) in the number of grains per spike.
The FT-A2 A10 allele is very rare in modern durum wheats, so this germplasm is particularly useful to introgress this favorable allele in durum breeding programs. The A10 allele is present at high frequency in modern common wheat breeding programs, particularly in winter wheats and fall planted spring wheats.
