This cultivar was originally collected and introduced as an unusual form of Hedychium coccineum, but is now considered to have originated from natural hybridization of H. coccineum and H. gardnerianum. It has proven to be consistently hardy without winter protection and reliable in its performance ever since it was first planted in 2006. It seems to produce and maintain rhizomes deeper than most other Hedychium, which provides it some protection from winter cold. This variety also has a very long season of flowering, and combined with its bright orange color and some fragrance, is probably one of the best Hedychium selections for gardens in this region.
