Two old maps dating to the 1960s show three Ginkgo biloba (with handwritten IDs, and no NA numbers) in the triangle bed that was west-southwest of the Administration Building. One noted them as "Princeton" (the source) and another was marked "fastigiate?", in what appears to be Skip March's handwriting. These were probably obtained too early to be 'Princeton Sentry' and do not appear to be 'Fastigiata', but may have been some other selection with narrower habit than the species, at least while young. These trees have taken a very long time to reach a size that ginkgo typically achieve much more quickly, and they are still narrow relative to their height. One of the three, very close to the path (today) or road (in 1975) is smaller, narrow, and looks semi-pendulous, and is the only tree to produce seed thus far. It is much more attractive than the rest. -SBL | 2143074 | NA 3675 |
