The nearby woodland is comprised mostly of open habitat of longleaf pine and an understory tree and shrub layer of evergreen and deciduous species. There is also a wealth of herbaceous species in moist to wet conditions of the habitat where there is rich organic matter in the surface layer. Slope: 0 percent. Aspect: N/A. The underlying geology of this area is classified as Alluvium, of Pleistocene/Holocene origin and consists of undifferentiated Quaternary sediments of varying thickness including siliciclastics, organics and freshwater carbonates. The siliciclastics are light gray, tan, brown to black, unconsolidated to poorly consolidated, clean to clayey, silty, unfossiliferous, variably organic-bearing sands to blue green to olive green, poorly to moderately consolidated, sandy, silty clays. Organics occur as plant debris, roots, disseminated organic matrix and beds of peat. Freshwater carbonates, often referred to as marls in the literature, are scattered. (Source: USGS Florida Geologic Map Data.) The primary soil types in the collection area are classified as Pactolus Loamy Sand soils (0 to 5 percent slopes). The Pactolus Series consists of very deep, moderately well to somewhat poorly drained soils. Permeability is rapid. These Coastal Plain soils, typically found with streams and marine terraces and were formed by loamy and sandy fluvial sediments and marine sediments. The strata is, generally, uniformly loamy sand that is very friable and strongly acid from the surface to a depth of 1.8 meters. (Source: NRCS Web Soil Survey.)Wild material2165660NA 88830

From cuttings of NA 78779-H; propagation date uncertain, but a number of years prior to accessioning (I remember seeing the cuttings in the greenhouse, but they were never documented--maybe from 2010-2013?); plants now growing in front of the Grove of State Trees restroom are fairly large, in two masses. Although the original source of the parent accession is technically not known, the cultivar had been recently patented and introduced (ca 2006), so it likely came from a source very close to the originator, Pat McCracken/McCracken's Nursery.2151466NA 78779

Soils: The underlying geology of this area is of Cretaceous origin and characterized as Selma Group; Providence Sand. The upper part of the profile consists of cross-bedded fine to coarse sand and white, dark-gray and pale-red-purple mottled clay containing lignite, sand, and kaolin. The lower part consists of dark-gray laminated to thin-bedded silty clay and abundantly micaceous, carbonaceous, fossiliferous very fine to fine sand.

The primary soil types in the collection area are classified as Nankin-Lucy Complex soils (20 to 60 percent slopes). The Nankin Series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately slowly permeable soils on uplands of the Coastal Plain. They formed in stratified loamy and clayey marine sediments. Slopes range from 0 to 60 percent. Soils are comprised of sandy loam in the upper 25 cm to sandy clay loam and sandy clay in lower strata to about 1.7 meters deep; these soils are strongly acid. The Lucy Series consists of very deep, well drained, moderately permeable soils on uplands. They formed in sandy and loamy marine and fluvial sediments of the Southern Coastal Plain. Slopes vary from 0 to 45 percent. These soils are generally loamy to sandy loam in the upper 25 cm and sandy clay loam in the lower strata to 2 meters; these are strongly acid soils.

Soils: The underlying geology of this area is of Quaternary to Late Pleistocene origin and comprised of the Beaumont Formation. This formation is yellowish- to brownish-gray, locally reddish orange with very fine to fine quartz sand, silt, and minor fine gravel, intermixed and interbedded. It also includes stream channel, point-bar, cravasse-splay, and natural levee ridge deposits, and clayey fill in abandoned channels. Channel fill is dark brown to brownish-gray with laminated clay and silt that is organic-rich. Includes marine delta-front sand, lagoonal clay, and near-shore marine sand beneath and landward of bays along the coast. Depth of this unconsolidated outwash ranges from 3-100 meters thick.

The primary soil types in the collection area are classified as Cowmarsh series. The Cowmarsh series consists of very deep, very poorly drained soils that formed in mucky silty clayey alluvial deposits of Holocene age. These depressional soils are oxbows and relict channels of rivers where flooding and ponding is frequent. Slope ranges from 0 to 1 percent but mainly less than 1 percent. very poorly drained. Runoff is negligible. Frequently flooded for very long periods from February through May and surface remains saturated for very long periods once flood waters have receded.

Plant is relatively common in the moist-wet and mesic edges of the wetland habitat.31.17181200, -93.7511800081Plants are growing in part-shade to part-sun in a depression wetland and slightly upslope of a small upland valley stream area surrounded by upland Pinus palustris and Pinus taeda forests. While the region had a severe drought during 2022, this depression wetland remained mucky wet throughout.
Soils: The underlying geology of this area is of Oligocene origin and characterized as Catahoula Formation. This formation is extensive and deep in Texas, up to 185 meters thick. In the area of the collection the Catahoula Formation is primarily mudstone and sand. The upper 90-150 meters is mudstone that is tuffaceous, and sandy; also, occasionally, with some bentonitic clay.

The primary soil types in the collection area are classified as Letney soils. These soils consist of deep, somewhat excessively drained, moderately rapidly permeable soils on uplands. They were formed in thick loamy and sandy sediments on the Western Coastal Plain. The Letney soils are on gently sloping uplands with slopes ranging from 1 to 5 percent. They are typically strongly acidic. It should be noted that the upper surface, to an unknown depth has a significant amount of decomposed and undecomposed organic litter, presumably from sphagnum, at least, in part.

118NSL 439945'WILDWOOD'Morella caroliniensis (Mill.) Small New Jersey, United StatesNLGRPNot Available2004DEVELOPEDPRE 1993CultivarWildwood bayberry is an erect shrub with exceptionally good tolerance to salt spray. On coastal sand dunes, it will probably not exceed 1.8 m in height, while inland will grow to heights up to 2.4 m. Wildwood is a crooked multi-stemmed shrub with dark green foliage; leaves alternate, simple, serrated, elliptic-obovate, and about 3.8 cm long. Both leaves and fruit of Wildwood bayberry have a distinct appealing aroma; oils can be extracted from both to scent candles, potpourris, etc. Its waxy gray-white clusters of fruit are 3.5-4.5 mm in diameter and develop from inconspicuous flowers which bloom in early spring from second year stems. Male and female catkins are produced by separate plants, but the fruit only forms on the female plants. The fruit will remain attached to the stem well in to the winter. Once established, the shrub will slowly spread vegetatively by rhizomes as well as viable seeds, forming dense thickets. The root system has nitrogen bearing nodules attached to it which aid in the plants development by synthesizing nitrogen for the plant to utilize; this characteristic helps wildwood survive in stressed environments such as coastal sand dunes. Essential and versatile plant for stabilizing coastal sand dunes and excellent late winter leaf and fruit retention for wildlife. Other uses include windbreak, erosion control and landscape hedge.1694852NSL 439945
