Moench subsp. bicolor | Texas, United States | S9 | | | 2018 | DEVELOPED | | | | | | Breeding material | Five sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) germplasm lines (PSLS-CTB06, PSLS-CTR07, PSLS-CTR08, PSLS-CTB09 and PSLS-CTB10) were developed by the USDA-ARS in Lubbock TX. The primary purpose for the release of these lines is to provide an alternative germplasm choice with superior early season cold tolerance. The PSLS-CTB06 is derived from the plant introduction PI 452707, PSLS-CTR07 is derived from the plant introduction PI 568351, PSLS-CTR08 and PSLS-CTB09 are derived from the plant introduction PI 452808. PSLS-CTB10 is derived from the plant introduction PI 452605. These lines derived from selected PI germplasm were evaluated for final germination percentages (FPG) and vigor ratings for field cold germination and vigor tests performed in 2015 and 2016. For public and private breeders, these new germplasm lines are an additional source for improving abiotic stress tolerance in diverse sorghum production environments. PSLS-CTB06 exhibited the highest percent germination levels under low temperatures in the field. PSLS-CTR08 showed the second best germination percentage, followed by PSLS-CTB09. PSLS-CTR07and PSLS-CTB10 exhibited germination percentages similar to P85Y34. Finally, PSLS-CTB06, PSLS-CTR07, PSLS-CTR08, PSLS-CTB09 and PSLS-CTB10 had greater germination percentages than previously identified Hong Ke Zi (HKZ) [PI 567946], Gai Gaoliang (GGL) [PI 610727], and Niu Sheng Zui (NSZ) [PI 568016] cold tolerant Chinese sorghum lines (Burow, et al., 2016, Chopra, et al., 2015, Franks, et al., 2006, Singh, 1985). | 1958257 | PI 687139 |
