Cowboy is medium-late maturing and medium height and has a medium length coleoptile and medium straw strength. Cowboy was selected as an F3-derived F4 line (F3:4). Cowboy is moderately resistant to North American races of stem rust (caused by Puccinia graminis Pers.:Pers f. sp. tritici Eriks. and E. Henn) and susceptible to stem rust race TTKSK found in Kenya. Cowboy is moderately susceptible to stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis Westend.), moderately susceptible to leaf rust (caused by Puccinia triticina Eriks.), susceptible to wheat soilborne mosaic and wheat spindle streak mosaic viruses, and moderately susceptible to barley yellow dwarf virus. The reaction of Cowboy to wheat streak mosaic virus is not known.
