New Hampshire, United StatesW62021DEVELOPED08/03/2021Genetic materialChickpea mutant PM233 was identified following gamma-irradiation mutagenesis of wild type desi variety ICC 640, which had been obtained as part of a large set of chickpea germplasm sent from ICRISAT to the University of California, Davis in 1980. Mutant PM233 and its derivative PM233B have been non-nodulating in all conditions tested. Upon initial isolation and identification of the mutant, the mutant was crossed once with its wild type parent, ICC 640, an F1 plant was selfed, and the F2 population was screened for individuals displaying the respective mutant phenotype, which was recessive. A single F2 individual displaying the mutant phenotype was selected and selfed to obtain mutant derivative PM233B. In the years since, the mutant and wild type lines have been periodically grown out and subjected to selfing in the greenhouse to generate fresh seed.
