Avery is an awned, white-chaffed, hard red winter wheat. Avery is medium-late maturing and medium tall. Avery has a medium length coleoptile, fair straw strength, and good pre-harvest sprouting tolerance. Avery is moderately susceptible to North American races of stem rust (caused by Puccinia graminis Pers.:Pers f. sp. tritici Eriks. and E. Henn) and moderately susceptible to those found in Kenya (Ug-99 and derivatives). Avery is moderately susceptible to stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis Westend.), resistant to wheat soilborne mosaic and wheat spindle streak mosaic viruses, susceptible to leaf rust (caused by Puccinia triticina Eriks.), moderately susceptible to wheat streak mosaic virus, and tolerant to barley yellow dwarf virus. Avery is susceptible to a collection of endemic biotypes of the Hessian fly [Mayetiola destructor (Say)], resistant to greenbug Biotype E [Schizaphis graminum (Rondani)], and susceptible to Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia Kurdjumov) Biotypes 1 and 2.
