Itis medium maturing and medium-tall. Byrd has a medium length coleoptile, good straw strength, and moderate pre-harvest sprouting tolerance. Byrd is generally susceptible to North American races of stem rust (caused by Puccinia graminis Pers.:Pers f. sp. tritici Eriks. and E. Henn), but resistant to those found in Kenya (Ug-99 and derivatives). It is moderately resistant to stripe rust (Puccinia striiformis Westend.) and tolerant to barley yellow dwarf virus. Byrd is susceptible to leaf rust (caused by Puccinia triticina Eriks.), wheat soilborne mosaic and wheat spindle streak mosaic viruses, and Triticum mosaic virus. The reaction of Byrd to wheat streak mosaic virus is not known.
