Among the alleles at the ert-a locus, rachis internode length ranged from 1.7 to 2.6 mm. The ert-a.6 allele produces plants with shorter internodes than most other ert-a alleles. Plants with an allele at the ert-a locus are 10 to 15 cm shorter than parental cultivars. The effects of the ert-a mutants on spike density are partially reversed by GA3 treatments. Plants of the Bowman backcross-derived line retained the above traits and headed 3 to 6 days earlier than Bowman. Inheritance: Monofactorial recessive.
