Though only recently introduced into South Africa, it has long been yielding excellent wine in Portugal, its country of origin. Experimental local vinifications have proved very successful so far. The Fernao Pires bunch is medium-large and fairly compact. The berries are medium to large, sub-oval, greenish yellow when fully ripe and with a very characteristic musky flavour. They ripen early with good sugar and fruity acid contents. At the end of 1979 there were 4,769 vines of this variety in local vineyards." Information taken from www.wine-lovers-page.com/wineguest/wgg.html: "White-wine variety widely grown in the Ribatejo and other regions of Portugal. Used to make aromatic and somewhat spicy-tasting dry, sweet and sparkling wines. Also quite widely grown in South Africa."1008336DVIT 719
