Evaluation location: Puerto Rico, United States
The USDA-ARS Tropical Agriculture Research Station's Musa spp. 'banana' collection was field characterized at the Isabela, PR research farm over two cropping cycles (2005-2007). Characterization efforts focused on highly discriminating phenotypic traits in addition to agronomic traits of importance (e.g., bunch size, and fruit size/number) and these were recorded for all accessions being evaluated. Both phenotypic and agronomic traits were measured in a attempt to efficiently distinguish among genetically similar clonally propagated accessions as well as to identify some of the accessions with promising agronomic potential.
