Nine carambola cultivars were evaluated at the UPR-Juana Diaz Agricultural Experiment Substation (San Anton; fine-loamy, mixed isohyperthermic Cumulic Haplustoll) for fruit production and quality. Six months old trees grafted onto Golden Star rootstocks were transplanted to the field March 17, 1999. Soil type for the site was Mollisol, pH in water 8.28, pH in calcium chloride, 7.85; Ammonium nitrogen, 14.00 mg/kg; Nitrate nitrogen, 14.00 mg/kg; Organic carbon, 0.41 %; Phosphorus, 104.00 kg.ha-1; Potassium, 650.00 mg/kg; Calcium, 3158.00 mg/kg; Magnesium, 337.00 mg/kg.
