Evaluation location: Oregon, United States
Lentil accessions were planted during the last week of May using a hand-pushed belt planter. One row plots about three meters long and 75 cm between rows were established. Pea cultivars Little Marvel and Sounder were included periodically (about every 100 lentil accessions) as susceptible checks, and Oregon Sugar Pod II, Oregon Pioneer, and Oregon Trail were included as resistant checks. Moisture was provided through sprinkler irrigation irrigation applied at weekly intervals at the beginning of the growing season. After flowering, one final irrigation was applied. We relied upon natural infection (via aphids) from the surrounding vegetation. Plots were rated during pod fill using a 1 - 5 scale where 1 = plants healthy (leaves green and fully expanded, normal leaf and stem shape, normal growth), 3 = plants with moderate infection (leaves may have chlorotic patches, leaves and stems with distorted growth, some stunting), and 5 = plants severely stunted, distorted and dead.
