Narrative
Arkot 1308 is a conventional cotton germplasm line with morphological traits similar to ‘UA222’ (check cultivar). Lint yields of Arkot 1308 from replicated field tests at four sites in Arkansas over four years were greater than lint yields of UA222 and ‘UA48’ (check cultivar) at each location except Judd Hill. Over all locations, lint yields of Arkot 1308 were 10.9% and 24.6% greater than UA222 and UA48, respectively. Soils at all sites are silt loams, except the Sharkey clay at Keiser. Compared to UA222, Arkot 1308 produced higher seed ha-1 (17.93 × 106 vs. 16.50 × 106), open boll percentage (58 vs. 52%), plant height (99 vs. 96 cm), and lint fraction (40.9 vs. 40.1%); equal lint index (7.8 vs. 7.7 g), seed index (11.0 vs. 11.2 g), S-score (75 vs. 74), fibers per seed (16341 vs. 15975), fiber density (176 vs. 172 fibers mm-2 of seed coat), leaf pubescence rating (4.6 vs. 4.2), stem pubescence (5.5 vs. 5.3 rating), quality score (57 vs. 56), micronaire (4.41 vs. 4.42), fiber length (31.6 vs. 31.6 mm), fiber uniformity index (85.6 vs. 85.5%), fiber strength (327 vs. 329), elongation (8.3 vs. 8.3%), short fiber content (5.8 vs. 5.8%); and lower marginal bract trichome density (37 vs. 40 trichomes cm-1). Arkot 1308 is resistance to all U.S. races of Xanthomonas citri ssp. malvacearum (ex Smith 1901) Schaad et al. 2007, the causal agent of bacterial blight. Damaged flowers for Arkot 1308 (61%) was lower than the susceptible Frego-bract check (93%) and UA48 (68%) and equal to UA222 (61%) in tests of resistance to tarnished plant bug [Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois)]. Resistance to seed deterioration of Arkot 1308 was lower than UA48 and UA222.
