Environment description: Rocky scree, below large waterfall (Shojigataki) and mountain stream. Growing in half-shade. Soil: Boulders, sand, river outwash. Slope: 45°. Aspect: East-southeast. Elevation: 3773 feet.

Comment: Multistemmed tree jutting out and over a steep stream bank reaching for light; only one tree found in fruit (out of many). Height ca 8 m; Spread to 10 m; Basal diameter estimated to be at least 0.5 m. Bark grayish brown. Leaves typical for the species, prominent hairs on abaxial side, very clean with no herbivory. Broadly spreading, green samaras, each to 2.5 cm in length. Japanese name refers to bird wings (the two simple leaves are at an angle similar to a bird in flight).
