Environment description: Rocky scree, below large waterfall (Shojigataki). Growing in open to quarter-shade. Soil: Boulders, sand, river outwash. Slope: 45°. Aspect: South. Elevation: 3778 feet.

Associated species: Cercidiphyllum japonicum; Hydrangea involucrata; Acer carpinifolium; Acer palmatum subsp. amoenum [as A. amoenum]; Euptelea polyandra; Acer pictum subsp. mono [as A. mono]; Zelkova serrata; Artemisia vulgaris; Pterostyrax hispidus; Buddleja japonica [as Buddleia japonica]; Betula grossa.
Comment: Multi-stemmed tree, reaching up (or out) for the light. Height 12 m; Spread 7 m; DBH 40 cm basal. First-year stems green, but 2nd year stems dark gray to black (soot colored). With greater age, stems develop characteristic green and silver diamond patterns and striations, persisting with age. Leaves typical for the species; dark green and occasionally tar spotted. Green (occasionally pinkish) samaras each up to 1.5 cm in length; infructescences draping down 15 to 20 cm; some insect predation and webbing found on 1st tree's seeds however 2nd much cleaner. Seed collected from 2 plants. Second tree collected at 3337 ft, elevation, 35° 44.214' N and 138° 20.104' E. Japanese name refers to the narrow axis of the inflorescence.
