Comment: Walter's viburnum is a dense, twiggy, upright-ascending to spreading evergreen shrub to small tree with a rounded form. Native to hammocks, thickets, river bottomlands, and swamp margins. Leaves 1” to 2”, opposite, obovate, spathulate to oblanceolate, shiny, dark green in summer with varying amounts of purple fall color; margins entire to slightly toothed. Flowers white, in 2-3” cymes, late winter to early spring. Fruit small (1/4”), oval, blue drupes. Can be a great substitute for yaupon holly, Ilex vomitoria. Tolerates shearing very well. Common in wet woods, river floodplains, [from] Walton County east. Fruit collected off of 3 plants.
