Comment: Hammocksweet azalea is a deciduous shrub, 5-15’ tall, with an upright, vertical habit. Grows in gallberry-titi thickets, bayheads, wet flatwoods, stringers, along blackwater streams; even grows in systems with salt water intrusion and high salinity. Bark smooth and gray; young twigs pubescent, rusty, reddish-brown. Leaves alternate, ovate to obovate, dark green above, light green below, pubescent, with non-glandular hairs; margins ciliate. Diistal marginal tips of bud scales brownish, pointed. Flowers fragrant, porcelain white, with long exserted stamens and style; trusses produced from terminal buds on prior seasons growth; outer corolla surface densely pubescent with stalked glands. Fruit is a glandular pubescent capsule. Seed collected from 3 plants.
