Narrative
Full name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Alpinia sp. aff. A. zerumbet. Previously identified as Elettaria cardamomum, but reidentified as Alpinia aff. speciosa while at Smithsonian Institution; their web record cites the species as Alpinia aff. speciosa (Blume) D. Dietr. However, that is a synonym of Etlingera elatior, so it is presumed that they mean Alpinia aff. speciosa J. C. Wendl.) K. Schum., which is a synonym of Alpinia zerumbet and a much more likely identification in this case [see also NA 44053, which was received as Elettaria cardamomum but reidentified as Alpinia zerumbet.] The prior source's accession number, 198500380, is listed on the SI website, but the source is not; further record data has been requested. It may be a Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh accession number. The material is listed as having been collected or obtained in India. Obtained by USNA staff visiting the Smithsonian Institution greenhouses (courtesy of Carl Johnson, SI greenhouse manager). This accession was received with NA 87447-87466, but was not indicated on the list of records provided. -SBL
