Narrative
Full name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Elettaria cardamomum. Seeds ordinarily meant for use as a spice were procured by Erin Holden, prepared for sowing by pouring boiling water over them and allowing the water to cool first. They were sown in early April, and by June 28th, one seed had sprouted. As of accessioning, the plant is alive and robust, and may represent some of the only verified material of the species in the U.S. (plants sold under this name are almost exclusively misidentified and are actually some species of Amomum, according to Mike Bordelon, past pers. comm.) -SBL
