Narrative
Full name as recorded at U.S. National Arboretum: Conocarpus erectus. Bonsai, estimated to be 150 years old, in training for 30 years; collected in the Everglades in Florida by Mary Madison, who created the bonsai, and she sold the tree to Bill Jagoe of Newburgh, Indiana at the 1993 BCI World Convention. Mr. Jagoe gave the tree to Dave & Barbara Bogan in 2009, and it was then sold to Bjorn Bjorholm who acquired it for a prince of the United Arab Emirates at their embassy in Washington, DC; it was then gifted to Gina Haspell, Director of the CIA, by the United Arab Emirates, and donated to the U.S. National Arboretum 8/28/2019. Accompanying donation text: "The United Arab Emirates (UAE) in August 2019 gifted a beautiful 150 year old buttonwood bonsai tree to Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director Gina Haspel in honor of our countries’ strong and historic partnership. The Emiratis have nurtured the bonsai since collecting the tree from the Florida Everglades 30 years ago. CIA was honored to receive the bonsai—the first of its kind at the Agency—and wishes to share it with the American public at the renowned National Bonsai Museum."
