Habitat: Farm
Comment: Collector note: Levi got the seed in 2007 from his friend “A. D.” Munn (see separate entry). Levi says the seed produced an 8-foot-tall collard in one growing season. “I planted that seed in March of 2008, and measured the stalk in March of 2009, and it was 96 inches tall.” He says he uses his own make of fertilizer, but keeps that a secret. All Levi’s collard plants are large and vigorous, though none have been as tall as that one special plant. Many plants are more than three feet tall and three feet wide. Levi plants in March, since he likes to produce collards summer, fall and winter. He shares his collards with people, though in recent times folks have paid him a few times. Levi saved seed from these collards in 2012. Levi is an African American, living on the same farm he was born on in 1948. He grew up farming – they raised “almost all we needed to eat, plus a large crop of tobacco.” and NC103. 'Grissett's Tall Collard'. Levi Grisset. Supply, NC. Collected by Ed Davis. Date?
