Narrative
Arkot 1102ne is a nectariless (no nectaries on leaves or flowers), conventional cotton germplasm line. Other morphological traits of Arkot 1102ne were similar to ‘UA222’ (check cultivar), except Arkot 1102ne has lower pubescence on leaves, stems (near glabrous), and bract margins. Lint yields of Arkot 1102ne from replicated field tests at four sites in Arkansas over five years were equal to or greater than lint yields of UA222 and ‘UA48’ (check cultivar) at each location. Over all locations, lint yields of Arkot 1102ne were 7.9 and 20.8% greater than UA222 and UA48, respectively. Soils at all sites are silt loams, except the Sharkey clay at Keiser. Compared to UA222, Arkot 1102ne produced higher lint fraction (41.6 vs. 40.5%), seed ha-1 (18285 × 1000 vs. 16776 × 1000), fiber density (156 vs. 152 fibers mm-2 of seed coat), plant height (99 vs. 94 cm), open boll percentage (53 vs. 49%), and fiber uniformity index (86.3 vs. 85.5%); equal seed-score (72.9 vs. 73.4), fibers per seed (16253 vs. 16105), quality score (55 vs. 53), and fiber length (31.6 vs. 31.6 mm); and lower lint index (7.4 vs. 7.6 g), seed index (10.4 vs. 10.7 g), leaf pubescence rating (4.3 vs. 5.5), stem pubescence (2.2 vs. 6.2 rating), marginal bract trichome density (34 vs. 40 trichomes cm-1), fiber micronaire (4.26 vs. 4.45), fiber strength (296 vs. 316 kN m kg-1), fiber elongation (5.5 vs. 7.3%), and short fiber content (5.7 vs. 6.0%). Arkot 1102ne is resistance to all U.S. races of Xanthomonas citri ssp. malvacearum (ex Smith 1901) Schaad et al. 2007, the causal agent of bacterial blight. Damaged flowers for Arkot 1102ne (63%) was lower than the susceptible check (92%), equal to UA48 (65%) but higher than UA222 (54%) in tests of resistance to tarnished plant bug [Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois)]. Resistance to seed deterioration of Arkot 1102ne was lower than UA222 and UA48, but % oil and % protein in seed were high.
