Narrative
The native range of Pinus strobus is concentrated in the northeastern United States extending south into the northern edge of Georgia and west to central Minnesota. In Iowa, there are scattered populations in a few northeastern counties and also a very small disjunct population in central Iowa (Hardin County, Ames 32758) and also one in southeastern Iowa (Muscatine County, Ames 35635). This accession represents genetics from "legacy" specimens from northeastern Iowa in Fayette County. Genetics from this site likely represents the extreme southwestern edge of the species native range. Genetics may likely be adapted/tolerant to drought and also late winter/early spring extreme temperature fluctuations.
