Narrative
The cross S07-2680 x R0B-409, from which R13-13997 was developed, was made in 2010 in Fayetteville, AR. Six F1 seeds were planted in Fayetteville in 2011, and four were confirmed true-hybrids based on morphological markers. Self-pollinated plants were rogued, and the remaining plants were bulk harvested. The derived plant population was sent to a winter nursery in Costa Rica and advanced from the F2 to F3 generation using a modified bulked pod descent method (Fehr, 1987). The F3 population was then planted in Fayetteville, AR in 2012, and single plants were pulled and individually threshed. The F3:4 plant rows were grown as progeny rows in 2013 in Stuttgart, AR. The progeny row number 13997 was selected based on visual overall field appearance and designated as experimental line R13-13997. The selected row was first rogued and then bulk harvested as a pure line for subsequent yield trials and seed composition assessment.

R13-13997 originated from the cross between the University of Missouri breeding line S07-2680 and the University of Arkansas breeding line R0B-409. S07-2680 was derived from the cross S99-2281 x S02-6143. S99-2281 is a high-yielding, early MG V line and S02-6143 is a late MG IV line of unknow pedigree. R0B-409 was derived from the cross R01-2373 x R01-315. R01-2373 and R01-315 are high-yielding, mid MG Vlines.
