Environment description: Mesic woods adjacent rice paddies; much of overstory was Cryptomeria (planted); poor drainage throughout; most trees growing at edges where light was abundant. Soil highly organic and shallow.

Comment: Trees (both male and female) with large, broad crowns, typically branching at 2.5 m or lower; height 15 m, DBH 72 cm. Bark gray-brown and flaky, peeling in long strips, much like Acer saccharinum. Leaf blades ovate, 3-5 cm in length, unlobed to 3-lobed, with serrate margins, quite glaucous abaxially, borne on long (3-4 cm) reddish petioles. Samaras generally 2 cm in length, tan, borne on long (7-8 cm) peduncles; all dispersed by this date.
