Environment description: Edge of forest road, below north-south ridge; within flood plain of mountain stream. Soil a mix of gravel, organic matter, and mineral soil.

Comment: Multi-stemmed trees (both male and female present). Height to 10 m; DBH to 20 cm; basal diameter of stems to 75 cm. Bark gray, smooth with occasional horizontal strips of lenticels; never rugged or furrowed. Most leaves borne on short-shoot spurs, rounded to slightly reniform, 10 cm wide and long, with cordate base and crenate margins; some juvenile long shoots bearing ovate leaves, 7 cm long and 3.5 cm wide with cuneate bases. Fruit follicles green to brown, to 15 mm long and slightly curved; seeds to 6 mm in length with two wings (one longer than the other).
