Narrative
Colossus LJ soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] was developed by Clemson University’s Pee Dee Research and Extension Center in Florence, SC, and released as a forage maturity group (MG) VII glyphosate-tolerant cultivar. Colossus LJ is an F4-derived line originating from a cross between SC98-1930 and SC00-892RR. It carries the long juvenile (LJ) trait, which extends vegetative growth under short day conditions. Colossus LJ was evaluated over 7 years in 46 environments as an MG VII breeding line. In trials conducted across three South Carolina environments from 2016 to 2018, Colossus LJ yielded 3107 kg ha-1, significantly similar to the grain mean (2983 kg ha-1) and notably higher than the forage mean (2623 kg ha-1). Colossus LJ’s plant height (102 cm) was also significantly taller than the grain mean (78 cm) and comparable to the forage mean (109 cm). Forage nutritive value analysis showed that Colossus LJ had significantly higher crude protein levels and lower acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) in the leaf and pod compared to the forage and grain means, measured across two growth stages. Colossus LJ is an outstanding candidate for forage production due to its high biomass production, superior nutritional value, and adaptability to a range of growing conditions.

Description:
Colossus LJ traces to a single plant selection in the F4 generation in 2006 from the cross: SC98-1930 x SC00-892RR. SC98-1930 was developed from the cross F92-1792 x ‘Manokin’(PI 559932). F92-1792 was derived from a cross between PI 417479 x F87-4017. SC00-892RR is MG VI breeding line that was derived from the cross between ‘Dillon’ (PI 592756) and an RR1 donor from Monsanto. Dillon was developed from a cross between ‘Centennial’ (PI 548975) x ‘Young’ (PI 508266). The initial cross (SC98-1930 x SC00-892RR) was made in 2004 at Clemson, South Carolina. The F1 generation was grown in Puerto Rico in the winter, 2004-2005, and the F2 to F4 generations were advanced by the pod-bulk method in South Carolina and Puerto Rico, 2005 to 2006. Single plants were then selected in the F4 generation and sent to the 2006-2007 winter nursery in Puerto Rico to produce F5 seed that was used to plant preliminary yield trials in 2007. Once entering yield trials, the breeding line designation SC06-306RR was used. Plants received glyphosate applications throughout development starting with the F2 generation for evaluation of resistance to glyphosate.
