DH66OP represents a hexaploid (2n=6x=42) endophyte free, tall fescue genetic stock that possesses a L. multiflorum cytoplasm that induces or enhances rhizome formation in tall fescue, meadow fecue and festulolium. It is being released as a genetic stock. DH66OP is the result of hybridizing Nanyro c.v. tall fescue to a L. multiflorum, dihaploid including line IL3. Nanyro tall fescue is a non-rhizomatous, endopphyte free cultivar. DH66OP represents a broad based genetic stock possessing a L. multiflorum cytoplasm that can enhance or induce rhizome formation across various genotypes. DH66OP is indistinguishable form other continenral, hexaploid type tall fescue germplasm and should be treated as a genetic resource for the transfer of L. multiflorum cytoplasm to other festuca species. Selection within or backcrossing by superior festuca genotypes will result in cytoplasm transfer and subsequent inducement or enhancement of rhizome formation in the offspring. The release of DH66Op allows plant breeders to trnasfer the L. multiflorum cytoplasm to additional festuca genotypes and recover individuals the exhibit/express rhizomes. The maintenance of DH66OP is best accomplished through sibbling as tall fescue is gnerally considered a self-incompatible species.

Description:
DH66OP is derived from the hybridization between a dihaploid inducing L. multiflorum genetic stock (IL3) hybridized by a non-rhizomatous, endophyte free tall fescue Nanyro cv. This F1 hybrid provided a rhizomatous, hybridized by a non-rhizomatous, tall fescue dihaploid recovery designated DH66. DH66 was vegetatively propgated and transplated to a field nursery wehre it was cross-pollinated by numerous tall fescue germplasms. Seed were bulk harvested from DH66 clones and the seed was given the designation DH66.
