Narrative
Hippeastrum x hybridum ‘Sara Anne’ is a moderately tall bulbous herbaceous perennial. Bulbs are 3.5-4.5.0 cm diam at first flowering, maturing to 5.0 - 6.0 cm, producing 2-3 offset bulbs annually. Leaves are strap-shaped, green, two to four per bulb, 25-45 cm long, 4.5-5 cm wide. Scapes are 45-55 cm tall, usually 2-3 per bulb, each bearing 4-5 flowers per scape with pedicels 4-6 cm long. The flowers are moderately sized, trumpet-shaped, and emit an intense, persistent, sweet fragrance. The perianth is 9-11 cm long, laterally 10-11 cm and dorsoventrally 9-10 cm wide. The six tepals are of medium texture. The outer tepals are 8-9 cm long, and 2.5-3.5 cm wide at their broadest; the inner tepals are 7.5-8 cm long, the inner laterals 2.5-3 cm wide; the ventral inner ca. 2.5 cm wide. The tepals are densely striated purple-pink on both surfaces, with RHSCC red-purple 62A the closest match, with prominent narrow white keels on both surfaces and a white pink picotee. The throat is light green. The abaxial tepal sueface are infused with green towards the base. Stamens are 10 to 11.2 cm long, pink for most of their length, green in the proximal 1.5 cm; pollen is yellow. The style is ca. 13 cm and colored pink; the tri-lobed stigma is white and ca. 5 mm wide. This a complex, third generation hybrid that began with a hybrid of (H. lapacensis x H. papilio) x (H. ambiguum x H. papilio), subsequently crossed with H. doraniae.
